Teaching Statement

As a dedicated voice teacher and faculty member at the University of Alabama, my teaching philosophy centers on nurturing each student's unique vocal potential while fostering a deep appreciation for the art of singing. I believe that every student has a distinct voice and story to tell, and it is my mission to guide them in discovering and honing their individual sound.

Personalized Instruction

My approach to teaching is highly individualized, recognizing that each student comes with their own set of strengths, challenges, and aspirations. In my private studio, I develop plans that address technical skills, repertoire selection, and performance practice, ensuring that students progress at a healthy pace while achieving their personal goals.

Technique and Expression

A solid technical foundation is essential for vocal health and longevity. I emphasize the importance of proper breathing, alignment, acoustics, process-based technique, and resonance. However, technique is not an end in itself; it serves the greater purpose of expressive singing. I encourage students to connect emotionally with their music, using their technical skills to convey the depth and nuance of the whatever they perform.

Encouraging Growth and Confidence

I create a supportive and encouraging learning environment where students feel safe to take risks and make mistakes. Growth often comes from stepping outside one's comfort zone, and I am committed to guiding my students through this process with patience and positivity. Building confidence is a key component of my teaching, as it empowers students to present their best selves in any performance setting.

Continuous Learning and Professional Development

As an educator, I am committed to my own continuous learning and professional development. Staying abreast of the latest pedagogical research, and industry trends, allows me to provide the highest quality of instruction to my students. My involvement in the academic community at the University of Alabama keeps me engaged with innovative teaching practices and fosters a collaborative spirit.

In conclusion, my goal as a voice teacher is to inspire and equip my students to become confident, expressive, and versatile singers. Whether they pursue music professionally or as a cherished hobby, I am dedicated to supporting their musical journey and helping them find their unique voice.

"I left a larger conservatory and decided to pursue my education at The University of Alabama where I was a student of Dr. David Tayloe. His guidance and astute approach to teaching voice has changed my outlook on how I sing and perform. His attention to detail and the ways in which he teaches each individual voice is unlike any other. I've been fortunate to work with him and look forward to continuing my vocal journey under his tutelage."

"I had the opportunity to sit in on some of Dr. Tayloe’s lessons and I was very impressed with his approach and the results he got from his students.  His awareness of what his students are doing both vocally and physically really impressed me as he saw little things I completely missed and the positive impact it had in the vocal production was immediate."
